Dr. Christine Cocchiola
Survivor, Expert on Coercive Control, Educator, Advocate, Author of FRAMED: Women in the Family Court Underworld and creator of The Protective Parenting Program
Dr. Christine Cocchiola, DSW, LCSW is a leading expert on the lived realities of coercive control, bringing both professional expertise and personal experience to her advocacy and education. A college professor of social work and a protective parent herself, Dr. Christine has dedicated her life to exposing the systemic injustices faced by survivors of coercive control, especially within the family court system.
Christine earned her Doctorate in Clinical Social Work from New York University, where she was mentored by the late Dr. Evan Stark, one of the world’s foremost authorities on coercive control. A social justice advocate since the age of 19, she is the developer of The Protective Parenting Program, an evidence-based, attachment-focused therapeutic model supporting parents whose children have been harmed by abusive partners.
In 2024, Christine published FRAMED: Women in the Family Court Underworld, a groundbreaking book that has quickly become essential reading for survivors, advocates, and professionals alike. Praised by Ms. Magazine as a “call to action” that “exposes the gender‑biased injustice in family courts,” FRAMED gives voice to 22 women from around the globe and sheds light on the abuser’s playbook. Amazon reviewers have called it “a catalyst for change” and “a flashlight to cut through the disorienting mind fog created by coercive controllers.”
Christine’s impact extends far beyond the page. Her TEDx Talk, “It Is ALL Coercive Control,” has reached thousands with its clear and urgent message. She also offers private coaching through Coercive Control Consulting, providing compassionate, informed support to victims-survivors navigating escape, healing, and custody challenges.
While Christine has presented internationally to advocates, clinicians, and legal professionals, this Reclaiming Autonomy symposium marks a special first: sharing how the written word has been a companion and powerful tool for reclaiming her own voice and fueling her lifelong passion for justice.
