What storms can you calm?

What storms can you calm?

Recovery from spiritual or cultic abuse can be ever present but sometimes it’s the everyday stuff that catches us.

At this moment, I am, poised between two trips, sitting in a Wendy’s with a particularly harsh pop song playing just a little too loud. 🔊 I'm still reveling in my writing residency (more on that soon!) and biding time before picking up my husband at a train station, after which we will head south to visit family.

Before leaving for this trip, however, I hit overwhelm. I wrote out a check (for a home project) for $4.5K the same day that I learned my aching tooth 🦷 is likely to cost almost that much to fix. ‼️ After that, the car broke down and the the work I had just paid for needed to be redone (slightly). That’s when the storm descended. 🌩 I felt jerked around by an unseen, nasty hand of fate.

How did I get through?

  1. I collapsed on my couch and let myself be numb. Angry. Scared.

  2. I sat on that couch and made myself remember that I have a body - that’s there’s a body connected to my head where that aching tooth sat...

  3. Slowly (pain meds kicked in) and I journaled.

  4. Perspective eked its way in and out of focus.

  5. Night fell and the sun rose the next morning.

We human beings are resilient. My stormy day/week is behind me. We will somehow manage to pay the bills. As I look back at it all, and review my journal, I see how my writing led me to new understanding. That’s where the I stepped out of the storm. For at least enough time to catch my breath and re-orient. Sometimes it blows me away just how helpful it can be to put pen to paper, ✍🏼 fingers to keyboard ⌨️.

This also made me realize something that you may or may not be aware of: That Writing to Reckon classes are a place where everyday storms are faced as well as reckoning with cultic abuse. Integration of life storms happens in real time, at the same time. It's part of the magic ✨ that happens when we write with fellow survivors...

How do you get through your everyday storms? What strategies do you find most helpful? Hit reply - I'd love to hear!

And come experience a Friday class to see if it’s a good fit for you. You just might discover something revelatory 💫 about your own experience.
